About the Class

This class invites students to explore the intersection of art and the natural world through hands-on projects inspired by their surroundings. Working with both traditional and experimental techniques, students will create handmade journals, explore natural pigments, draw and paint from observation, and learn the basics of sculpting imaginative masks.

Using the natural and built environment of downtown Corvallis as inspiration, students will spend time outdoors gathering visual references and materials. Walks along the riverfront will offer opportunities to observe local flora and fauna, with an introduction to bird and plant identification to deepen environmental awareness and creative connection.

In the studio, students will learn to use specialized art tools and processes to create unique works rooted in nature. Each class will include time for guided reflection, discussion, and sharing, allowing participants to develop both creative skills and thoughtful engagement with their work.

Students should come prepared for time outdoors with water bottles, sunscreen, and a small backpack or bag.

About the Instructor

Jen Hernandez is an artist and educator based in the Pacific Northwest. Her painting, illustration and storytelling in comics centers on themes of nature, adventure, and fantasy inspired by temperate rainforests and Filipino folklore and mythology.
