Mary McDermott has been making art for decades. Originally from Queens, New York, she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology from Queens College. She also holds a Master of Arts Degree in Humanities from California State University Dominguez Hills and a Practice-based Doctoral Degree in Fine Art-Painting from De Montfort University in Leicester, England as well as a Master of Arts Degree in Education. She has taught studio art and design, art history, research, and education for over 13 years at the graduate and undergraduate levels, online and on ground.


Subjects/ Media Taught

McDermott has been a graphic artist, jewelry, furniture and clothing designer as well as a maker, painter and printmaker. She has exhibited her artwork in numerous group and solo shows in the U.S. and Europe. In the summer of 2018, she moved to Corvallis after closing her working/teaching studio, The Urban Art Retreat and Studio, in Asheville, North Carolina, where she taught painting, drawing, printmaking, jewelry making, and a variety of other workshops and classes for 5 years. She began The Montford Artwalk in one of Asheville’s historic neighborhoods and is pleased to say that it is still going on.
