Oregon Arts Organizations Celebrate Arts Education Week
Oregon Arts Educators, representing several arts organizations around the state, celebrate the impact of arts education in their communities by requesting Governor Brown sign a proclamation announcing Arts Education Week to be September 8 – 14, 2019.
Arts Education, which is the practice and experience of the arts in many forms, is vital to the full development of a student’s educational experience. Through dance, media arts, music, theater, visual arts and more, arts education promotes creative expression and skill building. Arts Education is an important element of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) education and increases students’ ability for creative problem-solving and constructive questioning.
Arts Education week was established in 2010 by Congress and is celebrated nation-wide through participation and advocacy. Special tool kits and resources for arts educators can be accessed through Americans for the Arts.
Facilitated by Young Audiences of Oregon & SW Washington, a cohort of arts educators from Oregon Arts Commission, Arts in Education in the Gorge, The Corvallis Arts Center, Lane Arts Council, Latino Network, and Pendleton Center for the Arts, convened this year to discuss the impacts of arts education in their communities and within Oregon state-wide. From poetry to theater programs, artist residencies and special training for teaching artists, arts education is thriving in various forms throughout Oregon.
Students, educators and parents can celebrate Arts Education week by visiting a local arts organization, looking at local art in communities, attending poetry readings, live music, and film screenings, discussing what they see and experience, and learning more about how they can make and explore art.
