Art+Poetry | Barry Shapiro has taught photography to a variety of age groups since 2008. His passion is the art+poetry program team taught with poet and Fishtrap Fellow, Marilyn Johnston, for the young women at Oak Creek Oregon Youth Authority Corrections. This program combines self-portraiture photography with powerful poetry writing for self-discovery. Art+poetry provides participants with inspiration and confidence to move beyond high risk situations and see themselves as capable, creative, and powerful forces in their own lives. This program encourages youth, and adults, seeking understanding and self-expression.
They now have over five years experience team teaching art+poetry workshops together, and hope to grow this outreach to others who would benefit from the experience.
Barry received his BFA in Advertising Design and Visual Communication and completed a Master Photography Course with Williams Giles of Otis-Parsons in Los Angeles. Gaining years of professional experience in Southern California, from copywriting and marketing to freelance design, Barry worked with companies including Warner Brothers Television, Universal Studios, and New Line Cinema. Since moving to Oregon, he has worked with the Salem Chamber of Commerce, Salem Art Association, and the Silverton Fine Arts Festival. All this while consistently participating in solo and group shows exhibiting his photography.
