Request for Qualifications
Deadline: May 17, 2021 by 5PM
About Eastern Oregon University and the Field House
Known as “Oregon’s Rural University” and situated in the Grande Ronde Valley of Eastern Oregon between the Eagle Cap Wilderness and Blue Mountains in the City of La Grande, Eastern Oregon University (EOU) serves as a center of education, culture and scholarship.
The new Field House building will provide intercollegiate practice and competition space for EOU’s Track & Field program as well as other athletic programs, classroom and lab space for the Health and Human Performance (HHP) degree program, and space for EOU’s Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP). When complete, the building will include a 200-meter track allowing for intercollegiate and high school track meets in the winter, rock-climbing facilities, an OAP equipment rental shop and the HHP’s Movement Education Center.
$71,000 is available for commissioning exterior artwork. The budget includes artist fees, fabrication, insurance, shipping, travel, installation, documentation and all other project costs.
Open to all artists and artist teams in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. The RFQ solicitation and selection process is to be inclusive, encouraging a diverse selection of artists to apply, including artists from communities of color; women; and LGBTQ+ artists.
Materials must be submitted by 5.pm. on Monday, May 17, 2021.
A selection committee will review applications and select a shortlist of finalists who will be invited for an interview. Three finalists will receive an artist fee of $175 per artist/artist team to attend a virtual interview with the committee to discuss their past projects and artistic approach. One artist/team will be selected and contracted to create artwork based on the discussion, their past work and artwork development process.
Themes, Values and Goals
Applicants should be aware that this project is on a fairly short timeline due to bond funding deadlines. Footing must be installed in fall 2021 and the artwork by the end of March, 2022.
The selection committee seeks artwork that:
· is freestanding and not attached to the building in any way;
· integrates environmental beauty and Field House activities;
· expresses movement in an outdoor environment;
· draws attention to the Field House from a distance.
The Percent for Art selection committee has selected two specific exterior locations as potential art locations. See the RFQ PDF for more information about the art locations.
