SURVIVING TO THRIVING
The flagship of our workshop offerings, this art-centered program for cancer survivors and caregivers is now in its 7th year! Each week participants create a personal art piece around a theme chosen for its symbolic relation to concerns often expressed by those who have experienced cancer, whether recently or years ago. Skilled ArtsCare artists serve as teachers for each week of the six-week series. Journaling, poetry, and music are all part of the rich make-up of these popular workshops. Facilitated by ArtsCare Program Coordinator Mary Van Denend. “Thrive” is offered free of charge twice a year.
“Thrive” is held at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, Conference Rooms A/B, Starker & The Arts Center

SATURDAY ARTS WORKSHOPS

A scaled down version of our ‘six-week Surviving to Thriving’ workshops, but based on the same core idea that art-making should be fun, can encourage new ideas and imagination, and can foster a sense of caring for oneself through creative play and friendly conversation. Held at Samaritan Albany Cancer Resource Center on consecutive Saturdays for one month at a time, twice a year.
Workshops are scheduled for every Saturday 10 am-12 noon in FEBRUARY and AUGUST in 2013. Albany Cancer Resource Center, 400 Hickory St., Albany.

We are now offering our popular Saturday workshops at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital. For cancer patients at any stage of treatment, and their caregivers. Try your hand at Shodo (ancient Chinese calligraphy) with George Norek, MD, make wreaths or dreamcatchers, create clay tiles for the garden, or discover your “inner artist” with imaginative painting. Talented local artists from Linn and Benton counties will facilitate. No prior art experience is necessary. Call Christy Duncan at LCH to register or for further information: 541-451-6303
Open to anyone who has had cancer or is currently being treated, and their caregivers.
SHODO
Taught by master calligrapher and retired oncologist, George Norek MD, these are occasional workshops held in the waiting areas at Samaritan Regional Cancer Center, the Corvallis Senior Center, the Japanese healing garden at Lebanon Community Hospital, and other locations upon request. Shodo is an art form as well as a meditative practice that offers discipline, mindfulness, and serenity.
