This year The Arts Center is celebrating the holiday season with a themed exhibit of birdhouse-inspired creations. At first glimpse, birdhouses might not appear to have anything to do with the holiday time of year, but let’s look more closely: we as humans strive to help birds in the face of the continued decline of their habitat, and we often provide birdhouses as shelter and protection in suburban areas. The desire to shelter and protect beings that otherwise would 'go without' corresponds with the spirit of the season. It is a season of reaching out a helping hand, and about giving thanks and sharing (although we are a little disingenuous towards turkeys considering shelter and protection, but that’s just an aside). In this context we can see the birdhouse as the symbol for compassion and kindness and therefore the theme of the birdhouse couldn’t be more fitting for a holiday show.
Additionally, isn’t a birdhouse a wonderful gift? When it is a functional birdhouse it will give the future inhabitant a home, and the human owner the pleasure of the company of birds. If it is a decorative birdhouse it will be an artwork with a reference to nature, the outdoors and our feathered friends that surround us so beautifully here in the Northwest.
About 80, mostly-local artists will build a birdhouse that is either functional for bird habitation, or entirely fantastical and decorative. It can be designed to reside outdoors, or be intended as interior decor. Whatever the final designs and materials used, the show will be an explosion of creative ideas and interpretations of the iconic idea of a “birdhouse.”
Complete list of Participating Artists:
The Opening reception is on Friday, November 19. Wine, punch and delectable, light hors d’oeuvres will be provided. This date is the kick off for a 3-week, silent auction. All bids start at $50, and can work their way up in $10 increments. If there are still birdhouses without a bid after December 10th, those items will remain for sale for the full, artist-stated value through the end of the exhibit (Dec 24).
On the evening of the 'Corvallis First Thursday' event on December 2nd, we will keep our doors open until 7:00 PM.
An End of Auction party is on Friday, December 10th, from 6-8pm with music, wine & punch, as well as some finger food and birdseed(?). *Bidding closes at 7:30pm*
***If there are dangerous road conditions due to weather the evening of the end of auction party, we will extend bidding to Saturday December 11th at 6pm. Check the website and/or the phone message at The Arts Center for up-to-date information on December 10th.***
The Arts Center will close at 2pm on Friday, December 24th (Christmas Eve and the final day of the exhibit).
