Points of View

Points of View features the photography of Charles Search and Walt O'Brien from Eugene and Rich Bergeman from Corvallis. It is said that much of the art in photography lies in two deceptively simple choices - where to stand and when to open the shutter. This exhibit examines these and other creative choices photographers face every day, and asks the viewer to help answer the question: "Which perspective presents the ideal way of seeing?"

"Like most photographers, we like to think that we can find the one perfect way to portray a subject or a scene that appeals to our particular way of seeing," explains Bergeman. "But over the years we've come across a few images that leave us second guessing ourselves, where we look back at a previously rejected version of the same subject and realize that maybe we like this one better now."

The three photographers are inviting viewers to participate in the creative process. Points of View attempts to expose the viewer to what the artists call "this seldom confessed ambivalence within the creative process" and invite the viewer to offer feedback. The exhibit consists of 20 pairs of images that Search, O'Brien and Bergeman have made over the years, each pair showing alternative perspectives of the same subject that the artist has struggled to choose between. Viewers can record their own feedback in comment books stationed at each pairing.

"We hope this will turn the gallery visit into an interactive critique process that will enrich the experience for both the viewer and the artists, " Bergeman says.
