Oregon Weaving: The Tradition Continues

The professional artists involved in this exhibit have their roots in the weaving world. They have been known as both artists and teachers for many years -- disproving the old adage that “Those who can-do, while those who can’t- teach.” These artists definitely can “Do” and “Teach”.  In fact, in Oregon, there is a tradition of this type of co-existence.  Many of our fine-crafts artists do this.

The Corvallis Handweavers and Spinners Guild, who acted as curators for this show, wanted to show how this tradition is continuing by asking four well-known artist-weavers to exhibit their work and for them to choose the work of some of their students to exhibit as well.

Participating Artists:

  • Rosalie Neilson, Milwaukie, OR
  • Dee Ford Potter, Bend, OR
  • Shelley Socolofsky, West Linn, OR
  • Kathe Todd-Hooker, Albany, OR

Ms. Neilson and Ms. Socolofsky are both teachers at Oregon College of Art and Craft. Ms. Potter has been an art educator for the Bend School District.  Ms. Todd-Hooker teaches throughout North America for arts centers and craft organizations. All of the artists have taught for guilds and textile conferences including the conferences of the regional weaving organization, The Association of Northwest Weavers’ Guilds. Their teachings have greatly influenced the direction of tomorrow’s fiber artists.

The 2011 conference of the Association of Northwest Weavers’ Guilds will be held at Willamette University in Salem, from May 30 - June 5, 2011. For information on this conference, please go to: http://www.exploringfiberhorizons.com/

The Local Story:
In 1949 or 50, a group of weavers met to form the Corvallis Handweavers and Spinners Guild. This guild eventually became one of the founding guilds of the Corvallis Arts Center.  The weaver’s and spinner’s guild is honored to show the work of its two remaining founding members, Edith Miller and Evelyn Ball, in the Corinne Woodman Gallery during the "Oregon Weaving: The Tradition Continues" show in the Main Gallery. The exhibition will showcase several of their weavings, showing their textile explorations over the years. Their work is a time-capsule for weaving in our part of Oregon. They are certainly the legacy our guild has built upon.
