9th Around Oregon Annual Exhibition

The 9th Around Oregon Annual was selected by Jeffery Butters from Butters Gallery in Portland.

Juror’s Statement:

"I was flattered to be asked to select the work for this exhibition.  I grew up in the Willamette Valley and I attended OSU for two years and have guest lectured there since, thus I have some history with Corvallis and this beautiful part of the world.

There were a number of very impressive entries from a wide variety of disciplines.  I was quite taken with the volume of photography that caught my eye.  As I was moving through the images, I was looking for unique mark making when it came to painting/drawing, and strong design and thoughtfulness in all media.  Butters Gallery is best known for our strength in selecting and representing abstract painting.  As the creative director of the gallery, it is no surprise that I was drawn to more abstract work in this selection process.

In some cases with an exhibition such as this, a juror will select just one work by an artist such that a more broad range of artists may be represented.  In this case, I wanted to organize the strongest most telling exhibition.  To accomplish that, I focused on selecting first the artists whose work I wanted to include, and then found myself wanting to include more of their works as I felt it would better serve to more deeply engage viewers and help them form a better understanding the artists presented.

At first, in terms of two dimensional, non photographic work, the prints by Mark Perry resonated strongly with me.  They have a lean sophistication and reserved, yet alluring color sense.  Additionally, the works of Robert Tomlinson caught my eye with their playful yet formally accomplished quality.  They reminded me a bit, in a non-derivative way, of one of my favorite artists, Terence La Noue.

Sculpturally speaking, I was struck by Tamae Frame’s figures.  They are sensitively rendered and thought provoking.  Also I liked the elegant simplicity of Peter Meyer’s vases.

Conceptually,  I was drawn to the political content of the photographs of Rachel Hibbard, the content and visual quality of the quilt works by Clay Lohmann, and the inventive nature of Diane Archer’s and Julie Green’s works.

Photographically, the standouts for me were the remarkably spare pictures by Gigi Conot and the mysterious quality of John Ritchie’s compositions.

This was a rewarding process and I very much look forward to seeing the entire exhibition."

General Information about the Around Oregon Annual exhbitiions:

The Around Oregon Annual exhibition makes it possible for us to show a selection or sampling of current artwork produced in Oregon; we solicit submissions from all over the state of work no older than 2 years. The work is selected each year by a different outside juror. We ask someone who may have different sensibilities than The Arts Centers’ Exhibition Committee and Curator which will result in different choices, creating exhibits we otherwise may not have seen. Another “standard” is that we tend to ask just one juror, instead of a jury of three or five which results in the uncompromised choices for the final exhibit. We also vary the geographic area the juror is coming from.

The Around Oregon Annual is the successor of the Willamette Valley Juried exhibition, which had a 35 year run, but it was time to include more artists from around the state. Both are, within the exhibition program an exhibit of high quality artwork, representing young and upcoming artists as well as mid-career and established artists.

The Around Oregon Annual is made possible in part by the Steele Family Fund in The Art Center Endowment.
